We wandered around a bit while eating our real American
hotdogs and then walked a few canals over to the original Heineken factory for
the “Heineken Experience.” It started with a brief history of the company –
with plenty of photo opportunities, and continued with a lesson on how the beer
is brewed.
We got to taste
lightly roasted barley – which has a very sweet aftertaste, hops – which is not
so sweet, and wort – the sweet water that is left after barley is boiled in it
for an extended amount of time and then filtered out.
After we learned how to make the beer we were “turned into
Heineken” in this super cheesy, but funny short video. From there we went into
a small bar room where we learned how to properly drink and appreciate beer, in
particular Heineken (sidebar, it’s a good thing both Abby and I know we like
the beer).
At this point, since we’ve learned how to
drink the beer – don’t sip your beer like a lady, drink it like a man, to avoid
the bitter hops and only taste the sweet beer obviously – we were released into
a bar where we were given extra cold 350 ml. Heineken. Oh, and any drinking experience isn’t
complete without a pair of the Heineken aviator sunglasses we also received.
